Natural Remedy: Ingredients, Minoxidil, and Hair Science

I reveal the hair tonic that is backed by credible scientific research to accelerate hair growth, focussing on six ingredients.

Hair loss can be caused by stress, lack of nutrition, hormonal imbalances. DHT dihydrotestosterone is the culprit for accelerating thinning hair and hair loss and can occur if women of men have high testosterone levels in the body.

People favour a natural remedy over a pharmaceutical one. I am constantly rediscovering ancients secrets and bringing them to the forefront with research and my own experience of trial and error.

There are several oils suggested and proven to help hair growth, including olive oil, amla oil, or castor oil.

I have research extensively on oils that many may not have recognised yet to have been effective in hair growth. With consideration of scientific studies that have proved individual ingredients for increasing hair growth in participants suffering from male pattern baldness and on mice, below is outline for the ingredients involved.

I have created a powerhouse hair tonic for myself and I have enough confidence and belief this will work for others.

Black Seed Oil

It is believed that Black Seed Oil encourages hair growth based on its high concentration of antioxidants, fatty and amino acids, has antimicrobial compounds and reduces inflammation on the scalp. Reduced inflammation can allow for free blood flow to the hair follicle and increase the levels of nutrients travelling to the hair follicle. Inflammation can be a direct cause of hair loss.

A study published in JCDSA experimented on participants with telegen effluvium (TE), a scalp disorder which results in the roots of the hair follicle to move into a resting rage.

Half the participants received Nigella sativa (black seed oil) for three months, the second half of participants were given a placebo.

The study found that after three months, 90% of the pariticpants who were treated with Nigella sativa has increased hair thickness and density in comparison to the 7% in the placebo group.

Black seed oil also:

  • Moisturises the scalp,
  • Soothes and protects the skin
  • Reduces free radical damage.
  • Can alter the pigment in hair and reduce premature greying

Sesame Oil

Sesame oil is able to reduce the amount of 5-a-Reductase in the body, and consequently reduce the amount of DHT being produced.

Keimyung University conducted a clinical research in 2010[1], where the first group of mice received topical applications of saline, the second group received topical applications of 3% Minoxidil and the third group received topical applications black sesame oil. This was applied once a day, six days per week.

They found the topical application of black sesame oil for the three-week study resulted in rapid acceleration of hair regrowth when compared to the group of mice who received saline topical application, and the results in the black sesame oil group were comparable with the 3% Minodixil group.

This suggests that Sesame Oil is as effective as the Minoxidil drugs without the serious side-effects, and therefore in the long term is adding health benefits to the user.

Castor Oil
Castor oil has gained recognition by many people for increasing brow and lash growth, Castor oil is shown to have an anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial properties and is rich in antioxidants. It contains high levels of omega-9 fatty acids and ricinoleic acid.

Ricinoleic acid provides scalp relief by ensuring the hair follicle are infection-free, making it useful for those suffering with bacterial infections in the scalp.

Garza et al (2012)[2] conducted a study and found a link between PGD2 evelation and hair loss on mice and on male participants. PGD2 plays a role in the male reproductive system and is increased by testosterone. The overproduction of PGD2 is known to slow hair growth. Ricinoleic Acid is also an inhibitor of PGD2.

Peppermint Essential Oil

A study published in the Toxicology Research in 2014[3] found that as week 4 of an experiment on 6 mice, they found that Peppermint essential oil showed hair growth at 92% in comparison with Minoxidil which showed hair growth at 55%. “The depth, size and number of hair follicles were also markedly increased in PEO treated skin”.
This showed that peppermint essential oil “facilitates hair growth by promoting the conservation of vascularization of hair dermal papilla, which may contribute to the induction of an early anagen state.”

Rosemary Essential Oil

The high concentration of camphor found in rosemary may be responsible for improved blood flow to the hair follicles. Secondly, rosemary is antioxidant dense, and according to Skinmed’s study.[4], participants suffering from alopecia have “lower levels of antioxidants and elevated oxidants”. Therefore, rosemary oil can treat the scalp to become similar to a scalp that does not suffer from hair loss.

Horsetail Extract

Another ancient herbal remedy. Horsetail extract has a high mineral content, specifically mineral silica which can strengthen the bones, nails and hair. It also contains selenium which is an important mineral as it regulates hair growth.

Coconut Oil

Even though there are no credible studies to prove that coconut oil hair increase or restore hair, it can supplement the hair growth process by locking protein in the scalp by deeply penetrating the hair shaft since it is a triglyceride of lauric acid, as found in a study published in Journal of Cosmetic Science in 2003.[5] Further to this, it prevents the hair from becoming dehydrated and is effective at keeping the scalp and hair hydrated.

NOTE: This is a chosen or approximate measurement of product in a bottle, it is important to use the ingredient amount in this order to avoid irritation of essential oils. Use a dark glass bottle to preserve the nutrients in the ingredients.

Approximate measures

Sesame oil 50ml

Coconut oil 20ml

Castor oil 15ml

Black Seed oil 15ml

Rosemary oil 5ml

Peppermint oil 5ml

Horsetail extract 5-10ml

Topically apply and massage scalp five days a week,
Leave on 30 minutes before showering. It is best advised to allow the ingredients and its nutrients to travel into the scalp overnight

To see effective results, as with any supplementation or expensive hair loss treatment such as Minoxidil, continue the treatment for three-six months.

30-day challenge yourself (if you are not allergic to the above natural ingredients) and tell me your experience!
